The amazing encounters with marine mammals in the Red Sea
The Red Sea is a biodiverse ocean that hosts many species of coral, fish, and marine mammals, some of which are endemic to the region. I had the opportunity to dive in this amazing underwater world and witness some of the most incredible marine life I have ever seen.
One of the highlights of my trip was seeing a group of spinner dolphins, which are known for their acrobatic leaps and spins. They are resident in the Red Sea and can be found in coastal bays, offshore reefs, and islands. They are very friendly and curious, often approaching divers and boats to interact. I was lucky enough to swim with them for a while and watch them play and communicate with each other. It was a magical experience that I will never forget.
Another memorable encounter was with a dugong, also known as a sea cow. These gentle giants are the only herbivorous marine mammals and feed on seagrass beds. They are endangered and rare in the Red Sea, but there is a small population that lives in the northern parts of the area. I spotted one grazing on the seagrass near a reef and followed it at a respectful distance. It seemed to be aware of my presence but did not mind me. I was amazed by its size and gracefulness.
I also saw several species of sharks, including hammerheads, reef sharks, and whale sharks. The Red Sea is one of the best places in the world to see these apex predators, as they are attracted by the rich food sources and warm waters. They are not aggressive towards divers, unless provoked or threatened. I felt a mix of awe and respect as I observed them swimming by, sometimes in large schools. They are truly majestic animals that deserve our protection and admiration.
Other marine mammals that I saw during my dives were turtles, including green, hawksbill, and loggerhead; whales, including humpback and killer; and dolphins, including bottlenose and humpback. Each one of them was a unique and wonderful sight that made me appreciate the diversity and beauty of life in the Red Sea.
I highly recommend diving in the Red Sea to anyone who loves marine mammals or wants to discover a new world of wonders. It is a place that will leave you breathless and inspired.
